Today’s Audio MASTERCLASS: How to build wealth before AI changes your career

[1:40] – Alex shares something he believes about becoming successful that most people disagree with.

  • Success shouldn’t be measured solely by income or salary.
  • Everyone needs to define success for themselves, whether that’s helping people, building a family, accomplishing personal goals, or something else.
  • Money is only one possible scorecard for a successful life.

[2:38] – Alex tells why business ownership is still one of the most reliable paths to building lasting wealth, especially today.

  • He believes equity is greater than salary and would rather sacrifice short-term income for long-term wealth.
  • His perspective was shaped by seeing that many people who owned valuable homes and assets were business owners or salespeople.
  • Business ownership provides the opportunity to build something you actually own rather than simply earning a paycheck.

[3:53] – Alex tells why people should take AI-driven job displacement seriously, and how should they prepare.

  • Major technological shifts historically reward people who adopt and lean into new technology.
  • He recommends getting into some form of ownership; such as a franchise, independent business, or real estate; to diversify away from dependence on employment.
  • He points to the rapid pace of tech layoffs and believes white-collar workers who spend most of their time behind a computer should pay particular attention.
  • Having only one source of income through a W-2 may leave people unnecessarily vulnerable.

[6:04] – Alex talks about the first step toward regaining control of their financial future if someone just lost their job or believes AI may eliminate it.

  • Surround yourself with people who have experienced layoffs or have been responsible for making those decisions.
  • Use the newly available time to reflect on your definition of success and what actually makes you fulfilled.
  • Talk with entrepreneurs and business owners across different categories you’re interested in.
  • Reach out thoughtfully and learn directly from people who have already walked the path you’re considering.

[8:06] – Alex talks about what he thinks about the idea that a monthly salary can become a psychological trap.

  • He related the idea to his own experience at Ernst & Young.
  • He had followed the conventional path of getting good grades, attending college, joining a major company, and pursuing a long corporate career.
  • Seeing the partner track at EY made him realize that financial success alone wouldn’t provide the fulfillment he wanted.
  • An EY partner’s admission that he regretted not pursuing his own business gave Alex permission to take a risk.
  • The partner also reassured Alex that entrepreneurship would make him more skilled and valuable, even if his business failed.

[13:42] – Alex shares how he evaluate whether buying an existing business or starting one from scratch is truly worth pursuing.

  • The most important factor is fit.
  • Consider what you’re naturally good at, such as sales, operations, or managing teams.
  • Assess your risk tolerance and whether you prefer a proven model or an earlier-stage opportunity with greater uncertainty.
  • Understand what you can realistically afford and how much you can borrow without putting yourself or your family at excessive risk.
  • Clarify your “why,” whether that’s replacing income, creating a family legacy, pursuing a passion, or building generational wealth.
  • Alex’s four key evaluation buckets are finances, risk tolerance, operational strengths, and your why.

[16:01] – Alex talks about the three businesses he would seriously consider starting today, if he would be unemployed tomorrow and why.

  • He analyzes thousands of franchise brands and their Franchise Disclosure Documents to understand investment requirements, revenue potential, litigation, openings, closures, and transfers.
  • His first category is pediatric speech and autism therapy, driven by demand for services and insurance reimbursement.
  • His second category is mobile fuel delivery, serving fleets, construction equipment, trucking, and other businesses that need fuel delivered directly to their vehicles and worksites.
  • His third category is a modern moving business using AI and technology to improve booking, routing, and operations.
  • He sees all three as opportunities capable of producing seven-figure revenue at the territory or franchise level, depending on the specific business.

[19:38] – Alex talks about what mindset and actions separate people who turn job loss into opportunity from those who struggle to recover.

  • Reframing adversity can fundamentally change how you respond to it.
  • Instead of seeing a layoff as the end, view it as newly available freedom, time, and potentially financial runway.
  • Use the disruption as an opportunity to pursue something you’ve always wanted to build.
  • Reach out to others for advice and feedback rather than trying to figure everything out alone.
  • Take productive, positive, thoughtful action to create a new path forward.

[21:06] – Alex gives one sentence on each of the three businesses he would start.

  • Pediatric speech and autism therapy: A growing need for specialized services creates opportunities for businesses generating significant revenue.
  • Mobile fuel delivery: Businesses can serve trucking fleets, machinery, and other equipment by bringing fuel directly where it’s needed.
  • AI-enabled moving business: A technology-driven moving model can modernize booking and routing while requiring a comparatively lower initial investment.

[22:00] – Call to action.
