3 Value Bombs

1) Avoid pod-fading by consistently producing the right content over time to serve your audience in a meaningful way.

2) Podcasting is the most intimate channel to build an audience.

3) Choose the hard way when creating your niche; the higher the barrier, the lower the competition.

Today’s Audio MASTERCLASS: Podcast Melding Timeless Insights with Contemporary Ideas

[5:47] – JLD talks about right time to start a podcast (there are 4 million podcasts and the medium is very different than when he started 12 years ago).

  • Podcasts that are actually published is a fraction of the 4 million. When podcasters start to realize the amount of work needed to create a meaningful  podcast, they pod-fade – and that is okay.

[7:48] –  JLD shares why he doesn’t think an interview show is the right type of podcast for new podcasters

  • Interview podcasts are a bad idea for most people and businesses.
  • The shows that actually work are those that know their clients, what are their biggest challenges and struggles are, and are giving them the right solution.
  • A topic-based podcast, a Q & A podcast, a problem and solution based podcast is the way to go.

[12:41] – JLD talks about how to avoid a show falling flat if you have no content creation experience.

  • For him, he was lucky because he launched his show at the right time.
  • You have to put in the reps.

[13:19] – Alex talks about the success of Morning Brew Daily.

  • Morning Brew Daily was launched last year and has become a top 5 show in all of business in the last year.
  • He didn’t think it would climb up the chart before he launched it because podcasting was difficult, the distribution is different, and the competition is high.
  • Morning Brew newsletter delivers business news in a conversational tone 7 days a week. The reason they launched it was because there was no quick and digestible way to consume what gets you excited working in the business world.

[16:30] – Alex talks about how to launch a podcast.

  • Start with your market of one. First think of the problem.

[17:42] – JLD adds to this point.

  • You should launch a podcast if you have the No. 1 solution to a real problem.
  • Creating the No.1 solution to a real problem and focus on that.

[22:04] – They talk about barriers and niches.

  • They gave 2 kinds of examples, which are the slow founders and the slow acquired.

[25:20] – Alex gives 3 ways to succeed in podcasting.

  • Niche down significantly, make the interview shows more novel, and do it differently.

[26:51] – JLD adds that you should  be really focused on the struggle. You have and get to know other people in the business by getting 7-10 touch points. It’s like planting many seeds; if its not the right seed now, it might be the right seed sometime later.

[30:33] – Alex says podcasting is the most intimate channel to build an audience.

[33:57] – Alex describes it as a para social relationship, which is the easy mode. The hard mode is the technical skills that make the relationship grow deeper.

[34:45] – JLD shares how to grow the show in today’s market.

[35:44] – Alex adds that cross promotion works.

[39:35] – JLD talks about the opportunity for YouTube.

  • YouTube is a platform where so many people are consuming so much content

[42:00] – Alex shares an example of Epic Gardening as a niche.

  • As the internet becomes more fragmented the long tail of needs and passions just goes way bigger.
  • JLD adds that people are going to find you if you become the No. 1 solution to their real problem.

[44:10] –Alex talks about newsletters.

  • 90% of their audience reads newsletters.
  • Specific and intentional newsletters are on fire.

[46:01] – Alex shares how he is creating newsletter content.

[51:02] – Alex talks about the recommended process to start a newsletter podcast.

[58:42] – Alex talks about the 3 levels of content in terms of depth.

  • Level 1 – Super large addressable market
  • Level 2 – Niches
  • Level 3 – Super Niches

[60:27] – JLD shares what to do if you’re struggling to find a niche.

  • Take 2 niches and combine them to have a special niche of your own.
