Today’s Audio MASTERCLASS: How to Build Software Products with No Idea, No Money, and No Experience
[01:26] – What’s something you believe about becoming successful that most people disagree with?
- David believes entrepreneurs should start a business without an idea and remain skeptical of their own ideas.
- Instead of falling in love with an idea, focus on discovering a real problem worth solving.
[02:01] – How do you find a painful problem worth solving in an industry you don’t know?
- Put on your “green glasses” and look for overlooked industries and businesses that could benefit from better solutions.
- Interview business owners who outperform industry benchmarks in revenue, profitability, and work-life balance.
- Study successful business owners to uncover the challenges they still face and use those insights as a starting point for a product.
- You don’t need to know the industry beforehand; you need to ask the right questions and listen carefully.
[03:44] – How can entrepreneurs validate demand and get customers committed before writing a single line of code?
- Interview potential customers about their weekly routines, priorities, frustrations, and existing software.
- Dig into the details of their workflows, including the tools they use, the people involved, the time required, and what they have already tried.
- Speak with 5–20 people in the same market to identify recurring pain points and common solution requirements.
- Present a founding members program that lets early customers help shape the product roadmap.
- Ask customers to pay upfront, with a refund option if the solution doesn’t meet their needs.
- Aim to secure at least three paying founding customers before building the product.
[08:38] – How do you overcome imposter syndrome when entering an industry where you have no expertise?
- Start interviewing experienced business owners and industry leaders to understand their processes, language, and challenges.
- Approach every conversation as a researcher and explorer rather than someone who needs to prove their expertise.
- Ask questions such as “Tell me more” and “What am I missing?” to uncover deeper insights.
- David entered the accounting industry without a business background, but his curiosity and willingness to listen helped him build credibility and overcome self-doubt.

[15:19] – What are some scrappy, low-cost tactics for getting your first 10, 50, or 100 customers?
- Use the 3Ms of marketing: Market, Message, and Media. Know exactly who you’re serving, what problem you’re solving, and which channels you’ll use to reach customers.
- Choose a specific target market instead of trying to serve everyone. For example, focus on HVAC owners with 5–50 employees in the United States.
- Use the exact language customers share during interviews to communicate their problems and explain how your solution helps.
- Start with direct outreach through cold emails, social media DMs, and relevant online communities.
- Ask community administrators for permission before sharing your startup or solution with their members.
- Build content marketing around customer interviews, social posts, podcasts, YouTube videos, and virtual summits.
- Hold off on paid ads until you’ve validated that your marketing message and channels work.
- Spend 60 minutes daily on outreach, content creation, follow-ups, and community engagement while improving your product.
- Turn every early customer win into a case study that shows the customer’s experience before, during, and after using your solution.
- Repurpose those case studies across emails, podcasts, virtual summits, and other marketing channels.
[22:07] – How can aspiring entrepreneurs learn this process through The Foundation’s 12-week program?
- David shares how he went from being a struggling social worker with no business background to building Jetpack Workflow, a multimillion-dollar software company.
- After learning the process with Dane Maxwell, he entered the accounting industry, interviewed potential customers, identified their problems, and pre-sold a solution.
- He later repeated the process in another industry and pre-sold 10 customers for a new product.
- The program helps participants choose a market, extract business ideas from customer conversations, conduct outreach, and develop the skills needed to validate and pre-sell software.
- The Foundation is relaunching its 12-week program in January 2027, supported by a community designed to help entrepreneurs overcome limiting beliefs and take action.
- David shares an example from an early cohort in which a participant uncovered a problem someone was willing to pay $100,000 per year to solve.
- Past participants and businesses mentioned include Jetpack Workflow, Follow Up Boss, Sam Ovens, Jasper, and ZenMaid.
[22:50] – Why should Fire Nation visit TheFoundation.com and join the waitlist?
- David encourages aspiring entrepreneurs to stay open to opportunities, even when they lack an idea, technical skills, or business experience.
- The process starts with curiosity, customer interviews, and a willingness to learn rather than waiting until you feel fully prepared.
- The Foundation offers a structured path to finding real problems people will pay to solve and pre-selling software before building it.
