3 Value Bombs

1) You have to have something that cuts through. It could be an artist’s voice, their tone, the melodies, the lyric. But ultimately, when you find that combination of all of these and then someone has a very unique personality and persona, those are the makings of a real superstar.

2) There’s no expiration date on great.

3) Put the work in. If you put in 3 times more time and hard work, there would be so big a gap between the players; it would be so hard for them to catch up.

Today’s Audio MASTERCLASS: How to Identify and Develop Talent as an Entrepreneur

[1:26] – J shares something that he believes about becoming successful that most people disagree with.

  • You can move with integrity and have values, and also still have a high level of success.

[2:36] – J’s founding story.

  • He went to play basketball in the NBA.
  • Growing up, he learned that hard work is what it’s going to take in order to have a certain level of success.
  • He started out in music management because it was a good way to figure out where in music exactly he wanted to be.
  • They started a music distribution company called Human Re-Sources that he self-financed.

[5:31] – The Driving Culture.

  • If you move culture, everything else moves along with it.
  • Get something that is super sticky like play listing, folks on social posting and reposting, and other things that fall in line with the product being really good.
  • The cool thing about where the music industry sits currently is the culture and the gatekeepers are young folks on social platforms.
  • There’s no expiration date on great.

[11:57] – Finding talent is paramount. What are the attributes that you look for when searching for talent?

  • A lot of companies have the benefit of analytics and that is a very useful tool.
  • A happy kind of medium is a combination of analytics and gut instinct – where you hear something and immediately it cuts through the noise.
  • You have to have something that cuts through. It could be an artist’s voice, their tone, the melodies, the lyric.
  • An artist who is really ready to work, who understands what their North Star is, what the trajectory and the plan is in order to get there, and how they can be a good partner can ultimately be a superstar.

[15:01] – Empowering talents creating new opportunities as well as success stories.

  • The goal is to learn as much from them as they could potentially learn from you.
  • The trick was to support the artists and their vision.

[17:53] – J’s key takeaway and call to action.

  • Put the work in. If you put in 3 times more time and hard work, there will be such a big gap between the players; it would be so hard for them to catch up.
  • You don’t always see the results straight away. Be willing to work overtime. You can’t cheat the work.
  • Build a really solid network with people who are like-minded. The old cliché your network is your net worth is real.
