[01:06] – What do you believe about becoming successful that most people disagree with?
- Martha says silence can be a powerful tool when you give yourself permission not to respond.
- Humans are hardwired to explain and defend themselves as an ancient survival strategy.
- Social media has changed the nature of community, making some arguments less meaningful and productive.
- Martha learned through building her equine business that some people are committed to arguing rather than becoming clients, customers, or supporters.
- Her advice: recognize those interactions quickly, detach, and move on.
[03:15] – When did you first start thinking about using your success to create an impact beyond your business?
- Martha traces the beginning of her nonprofit work to the death of a horse named Brother Bear.
- Brother Bear starved to death despite being surrounded by grass because untreated dental problems prevented him from eating.
- Martha describes his death as preventable and says the experience permanently changed her.
- The Brother Bear Equine Foundation was created from her grief and determination to prevent other animals from suffering similarly.
- She began bringing together people who wanted to help rescue horses that had been abused, neglected, and considered beyond saving.
[05:27] – Why are entrepreneurs especially positioned to make a difference?
- Martha identifies apathy as a major force allowing abuse and neglect to continue.
- Entrepreneurs are naturally action-oriented and accustomed to envisioning change and making it happen.
- Entrepreneurs have credibility and can use their voices to attract attention and inspire commitment.
- Their behavior can serve as a powerful example for others.
- Entrepreneurs also understand how to tolerate fear and take action despite anxiety.
- They have additional resources—including capital, relationships, expertise, and audiences, that can help accelerate change.

[12:13] – Why horses, and why has rescuing horses others consider beyond saving become such an important part of your life?
- Martha recalls meeting a horse for the first time at age four in Washington, DC, and developing a lifelong love of horses.
- In her 50s, she created a business intended to help horse owners keep their horses healthy.
- That original business model failed because people were reluctant to pay for prevention.
- Her clients became people with desperate, complicated cases involving sick, injured, or dying horses.
- About 30% of the cases she works with involve animals that have been recommended for euthanasia.
- She developed a national reputation for helping horses considered impossible to save.
- Brother Bear’s death motivated her to ensure that his loss would lead to other horses being saved.
- In the two years following the nonprofit’s creation, the organization had saved 61 horses.
[15:00] – How can you turn people’s desire to help into meaningful, actual participation?
- Martha says people often don’t help because they underestimate the value of what they have to offer.
- Simply acknowledging that someone or something is suffering is already a form of participation.
- Refusing to look away removes anonymity and gives visibility to those who are suffering.
- Speaking up can give a voice to beings who are otherwise powerless or unable to advocate for themselves.
- Financial support doesn’t require large amounts of money; many of Martha’s donors give between $5 and $50.
- She illustrates the potential power of small contributions by imagining what would happen if millions of animal lovers each contributed $5.
- When many people participate, the burden on each individual can remain small while the collective impact becomes significant.
[18:09] – Why shouldn’t people wait until they’ve “made it” financially before giving back?
- Martha says waiting to become wealthy can prevent people from taking meaningful action today.
- She says even small donations can directly contribute to saving a horse.
- Small contributions can be combined to fund significant rescue work.
- She believes postponing action can leave people feeling disempowered.
- Her message is direct: don’t wait, the right time to act is now.
[19:41] – Where should successful entrepreneurs start if they want to give back but haven’t found the right cause or role?
- Martha’s answer: Start with what haunts you.
- Identify the issue that keeps you awake at night rather than beginning with a strategic business plan.
- A deeply personal connection to a cause can sustain you through difficult periods.
- She encourages entrepreneurs to apply their existing skills, resources, relationships, and influence to the issue they care about.
- She describes this as “the work of the heart,” not simply another business plan.
- Her repeated call to action is to start now—today.
