Today’s Audio MASTERCLASS: Why Social Impact is the Currency of the Future
[1:34] – Michelle shares something that she believes about becoming successful that most people disagree with.
- Its okay to take a break, to step back in order to step back in because often times you get to see a different angle, a different goal or role that you can do by stepping back.
[3:09] – Michelle tells her story that led her to creating Unsilenced Voices.
- Back in 2012 she thought she met prince charming but it became a very violent relationship. She fell head over heels when he met the guy and about 4 months in the relationship, the physical violence started and escalated fro 4 years. After she escaped that situation, she felt called to do even more with her story. Its not about what we go through but about how we respond to what we go through. She felt that God called her to do something huge.
- In 2017, she founded the non-profit organization Unsilenced Voices in Sierra Leone, South Africa where their book was published. They have done a lot of work in the US and is looking to expand.
- Its an incredible story and journey and she wants the listeners to know that no matter what you go through, you can make a huge impact using your story to help other people.
[4:58] – Michelles shares a real world example of empowering many survivors through her coaching and advocacy work.
- She runs a for-profit and a non-profit organization. For her for-profit organization, they do a book collaboration every year called “Breaking the Silence Voices of Survivors”. She encourage 20 authors to tell their story to help other people overcome their ailmemt, disease, depression, domestic violence, sexual assault and all different adversities.
- She also teach a program legacy camp where she teach people how to tell their stories through oublic speaking, creating books, courses and content.
- In their advocacy work, they do monthly sensitization meetings, open forum discussions and counselling with Unsilenced Voices to break free from what they have gone through.
[6:31] – Michelle talks about the role that storytelling play in attracting donors to Unsilenced Voices.
- No matter if you are running a for-profit or a non-profit organization, people will buy into what you do because they like and trust you.
- When you tell stories and talk authenticity and transparency , in a genuine way that you are a real human and down to earth, people will be attracted to what it is that you are doing.
- Storytelling is essential in attracting donors and clients in order to grow. With your story, people will trust you and buy into what you do , donate and help move your cause.

[10:56] – Michelle shares an innovative way she engaged donors to support Unsilenced Voices.
- One of the ways they engage their donors is through their flagship program called “Sponsor the Survivor”.
- Back in 2017-2018, she flew to Sierra Leone with a friend and took her to a bar where she saw a lot of young girs selling themselves for $1-2 and her friend wants to help them by enrolling the young girls in vocational training so they can get them off the streets and start their own businesses. This is where the program “Sponsor a Survivor” started and their first sponsor is Matilda, an amazing young girl who worked really hard but unfortunately, she contracted HIV and passed away from AIDS later tht year. They decided to name their flagship program after her – Matilda’s program.
- You can go to Sponsor a Survivor to get information about the program. For $100 a month , you are able to pay for a young girl to go to a vocational program, counselling and medical.
- They also incorporated Web3 technology and Crypto NFT, Block chain created by young girls in Sierra Leone.
[13:40] – Michelle talks about how operating a for-profit AND a nonprofit enhance the credibility of her mission.
- Operating has been a lot of work but it represents to donors and clients that there is something even more and that is social impact is the currency of the future. In order to attract people, they have to like and trust you and in order for them to trust you, they want to know that you are bigger than your brand.
- When you run both a for-profit and a non-profit organization, your clients will see that you have a mission, that you have something huge that you are doing to give back to society.
- Your social impact is key and important. If you care about something, do something and take action. Use your story to give back in a larger way.
[15:37] – Michelle shares the significance of integrating social impact while helping others.
- Our lives are not just about us but about the people around us.
- Significance is getting together to end a lot of injustice in this planet and create a world worth living in.
- We have a generation that is coming after us and its up to us to show that we care about making their life better. When we have that significance of integrating that social impact to help others, then people will trust, follow and know that we are leaving behind a better world for them and their children.
[18:26] – Michelle gives her key take away.
- Dory the fish in the movie Finding Nemo sings to herself ‘just keep swimming’ and she loves this analogy that if you go through something in life and its inhibiting you to move forward, remember that God can’t stir a parked car, so just keep swimming, just keep moving in a direction despite what is is that you are going through and know that God has your back.
