Today’s Audio MASTERCLASS: 3 Steps to a Highly Successful Luxury Business with Jen Obermeier
[1:22] – Jen shares something interesting about herself that most people don’t know.
- Even though she’ll be discussing organization today, she isn’t naturally an organized person.
[03:15] – Tell us about finding a niche that is ripe for disruption.
- These days it has to do with taking the business online; many business and service industries are figuring out ways to move online.
- In home organizing – professional organizers serve clients who have hoarding issues. They coach people professionally for improvement, but it’s rare that organizers are marketing themselves directly to that high-end clientele who wants the luxury of organizing done for them.
- Marie Kondo effect – The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up
[7:45] – What’s another niche – specifically in the luxury space – that you’ve seen or heard in the last few months that you think is really cool?
- A lot of interesting things with wardrobe stylist: people who will come into your home and help you find a unique style.
[8:45] – What would your response be to some critics out there?
- People now realize that the value of their time cannot be replaced.
- People are used to the idea of looking for and receiving specialized services.
[10:27] – Talk about identifying more of your dream customer. How does one start doing that?
- Do not hold back and sell straight to the people who have money; then work backwards from there.
- Make them want to focus on areas that they are great at and love doing.
- You have to consider who it is out there, who has interest or still has a vested interest even if the economy goes into a down turn.
- 4 Areas of Obstacles
- Physical – There are some customers, specially seniors, who do not want to let go of their 45 years of belongings.
- Emotional – It’s something that they need to hear or see differently in your message in order to connect with you and feel comfortable having you inside their homes.
- Mental – Mindset and building up a customer’s mental power.
- Spiritual – Beliefs.
[15:01] – We want to automate and systemize everything, so there’s this huge need and opportunity to actually provide valuable hands-on customer service – let’s talk about that.
- There are so many opportunities as a professional organizer, one of which is to physically handle the stuff.
[17:14] – Jen talks about the emotional aspect of organizing stuff for other people.
[21:15] – A timeout to thank our sponsors, HubSpot, FranBridge, and Manscaped™!
[21:19] – Scaling too soon can absolutely kill a business; scaling too late can absolutely kill a business. How do we know when the right time to scale is?
- Not everybody wants to scale a business. There are opportunities for people to set up a lifestyle business.
- 2 ways to scale:
- You can take it online and create an opportunity for people to hire you virtually thru Skype or FaceTime. It’s called virtual organizing.
- Building a team.
[26:56] – How can we position our delicious, life-changing service when it’s a want versus a need?
- It’s a luxury to have too much stuff.
- You must highlight the amount of time they will waste figuring it out on their own, or doing nothing.
- Connecting a lack of action on your potential clients part to how it might be impacting their children.
- Mental health is becoming more of a priority in the mainstream now. Anything you can offer to relieve stress and provide lasting peace of mind is going to be a plus in your marketing messages.
[31:44] – The science behind selling luxury…
- Jen highly recommends the book The Luxury Strategy by Vincent Bastien. This tackles how to make your business more desirable by doing some counter-intuitive things.
[33:28] – Jen shares a quick story about one of her students who worked on a project decorating a home.
[37:58] – Jen’s parting piece of guidance.
- Tell your super-organized friend who would do it just for fun, and has no clue that professional organizing is even a thing, that they can make bank with this even as a side hustle. You don’t have to be certified just to get started.
