Today’s Audio MASTERCLASS: How to Build a Brand People Trust

[1:16] – Scott shares something that he believes about becoming successful that most people disagree with.

  • You can’t give what you don’t have. Giving along the way is one of the greatest secrets to success.

[3:00] – What is Charity: Water?

  • We are now down to 771 million humans without clean water. That is from 1 in 6 people alive to 1 in 10 people alive.

[4:47] – From being a nightclub promoter to founding a charity.

  • He woke up one day at 28 years old and he felt miserable. He realized how far removed he was from living a life with any purpose.
  • His entire life changed when he was exposed to people drinking dirty water.
  • He thought of going back to New York at 30 years old and instead of getting people drunk and partying, he could promote something that mattered.

[8:09] – Reinventing charity with Charity: Water.

  • He talked to friends about his idea, and he realized that so many of them didn’t trust charities.
  • There was an opportunity to reimagine the way a charity could operate and interact with its supporters. He thought, what if 100% of every donation given to Charity: Water went directly to water projects?
  • Take the most common objection people have and take it off the table.
  • He showed a satellite image of what the donor made possible.
  • Build a brand that is not shame-based or guilt-based, that invites people to bring the best of themselves, to bring their time and money in the service of others.

[14:54] – Clean water has been brought to 15.5 million people. How did Scott achieve that kind of success?

  • They were so clear with what they were doing. They were on a mission to bring clean water to every person in the world, and they haven’t wavered from that ever since.

[17:41] – Scott’s favorite story out of 15.5 million people who now have clean water.

  • His favorite is a story from Ethiopia. The hotel owner came and recognized him. One of the women from the village walked 7 hours carrying a claypot, and slipped and fell before she got home. The water she spent the entire day walking for was all over the ground.
  • A couple of weeks later, he asked his wife to go there, walk her footsteps, connect in the most visceral way with the urgency of their work.
  • If you were born in a village without water, your life is so different.
  • Helen’s life has been different ever since she gained access to water next to her house instead of having to walk miles or an entire day for it.

[24:06] – What can we do to help?

  • The Spring – Join a community of monthly donors bringing clean water to people in need.
  • Charity Water – Help bring clean and safe water to every person on the planet.
