Today’s Audio MASTERCLASS: Why people find you intimidating & what you Can do about It with “Quick Confidence” with Selena Reznavi
[1:49] – Selena shares something she believes about becoming successful that most people disagree with.
- She believes that rebalancing power dynamics can help establish yourself as an equal in the conversation.
[3:25] – How do you know when you are giving off intimidating energy?
- If people repeatedly find you intimidating, listening and using that feedback to build emotional intelligence and awareness is essential.
- Skipping pleasantries and putting up walls can contribute to this perception.
- It is essential to make interacting with you more manageable if you want to improve this dynamic.
[5:26] – What is the difference between being intimidating and being confident?
- Confidence means believing in yourself and your ability to improve or succeed without putting yourself above others.
- It is about trusting your problem-solving skills and recovering from mistakes.
- On the other hand, intimidation involves leading with your status or credentials to assert dominance over others.
[7:26] – Are you intimidating, or are you intimidated?
- If many people find you intimidating, then you are rough. Perception is reality. On the other hand, if you are comfortable in your power and radiate confidence, you feel good enough and belong in your place.
- Many people struggle with this, and it is discussed in detail in Quick Confidence.
[8:38] – Can you provide an example from your book of a real-world situation that exemplifies the issue being discussed?
- After the pandemic, people may feel socially disconnected and less confident in social situations, leading to feelings of social intimidation.
- To overcome this, taking the first step in approaching others and initiating conversation can be helpful, even with intimidating people.
- This approach is called the “dog code,” where you make it a habit to be the first to greet newcomers or approach others at events, making it feel more natural and less intimidating over time.

[14:58] – What advice do you have for people who want to be more approachable?
- You can be more approachable by showing a genuine interest in other people’s thoughts and feelings, asking follow-up questions, and being empathetic towards their challenges.
- It is essential to balance tasks and relationships and to avoid being too rigid or dismissive of other people’s viewpoints.
- Sincere compliments are also a great way to extend confidence to others.
[17:05] – What if you are feeling intimidated by an essential figure in your life?
- As an entrepreneur, negotiating deals with big companies can be intimidating. One tip is to focus on the person you are negotiating with, not their title or position. Treat them like a respected peer, not someone with all the power.
- It can also be helpful to picture them doing ordinary things, like getting ready for the day, to remind yourself that they are human, too.
- Do not be afraid to have fun with it.
